Год на оси условный и выбран по двум печатным выступлениям 1902 года: Уэлдон, «Mendel's laws of alternative inheritance in peas», Biometrika 1 (2), 228-254, и ответ Бэтсона, «Mendel's Principles of Heredity: A Defence», Cambridge University Press (выходные данные по спискам литературы Олби 1987 и Эдвардса 2013). Genet. 8, 1971, 1-36) датируют «менделевско-анцестрианскую» полемику 1889-1906 годами, а Дэвис возводит разрыв Уэлдона и Бэтсона к рецензии Уэлдона 1894 года на «Materials for the Study of Variation».

In 1900 it could receive such a status because it could be fitted into the new perspective of the discontinuity of variation, which Bateson and de Vries recognized as nature's mechanism for preventing the dilution and loss (by crossing) of the variability necessary for evolution to occur.

«Versuche über Pflanzen-Hybriden»:

Weldon was the first to raise questions, privately writing to Pearson in 1901 that Mendel had "cooked his figures, but that he was substantially right" (Mangello 2004, p. 23, italics in original). After applying Pearson's newly developed chi-squared test to Mendel's data, Weldon (1902) did not overtly claim in print that Mendel manipulated the data but dangled the possibility in several statements, one of which reads, "the odds against a result as good as this or better are 20 to 1" (p. 235).

Fisher, probably influenced by Weldon's paper, famously stated in a 1911 lecture, "It may just have been luck, or it may be that the worthy German abbot, in his ignorance of probable error, unconsciously placed doubtful plants on the side which favoured his hypothesis" (Norton and Pearson 1976, p. 160).

The experiment had been designed to test Galton's ancestral law of heredity. Galton like other orthodox Darwinians assumed that in normal unitary populations heredity varied continuously, both in time and in amount. This had been contested for instance by Hugo de Vries and William Bateson who claimed that stepwise and infrequent hereditary change (e.g., "mutation") was the main source of evolutionary change.

Johannsen presented his famous selection experiment as the culmination of a line of criticism of orthodox Darwinism by William Bateson, Hugo de Vries, and others (Johannsen, 1903). They had argued that evolution is based on stepwise rather than continuous change in heredity.

However, when Johannsen sent this paper to Karl Pearson and Frank Raphael Weldon, the contemporary wardens of Galton's biometric heritage, the response was dismissive.

After Mendel’s laws were rediscovered in 1900, there was a vigorous debate between the “Biometricians,” led by Pearson, and the “Mendelians,” led by Bateson. The Biometricians argued that the inheritance of continuous traits, such as human height, could not be explained by Mendelian principles.

When Froggatt and Nevin wrote on the Bio-metric-Mendelian controversy in 1971 they called their article 'descriptive rather than interpretative', so they avoided the very questions we would like to ask. Provine, in the same year, concentrated on the strong personalities of the contestants, their clashes, and the scientific arguments in play. But in 1975 Mackenzie and Barnes argued that the controversy could not be accounted for unless recourse was had to sociological factors.
