K. Pearson, «Mathematical Contributions to the Theory of Evolution. III. Regression, Heredity, and Panmixia», Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A 187 (1896), с. 253-318 (сверено по Wikidata Q56143683, DOI 10.1098/rsta.1896.0007).

«Sur l'homme»:

The Belgian statistician, Adolphe Quetelet (1796-1874) attached so much significance to the normal curve because of his belief in determinism, which meant that there was an ideal statistical mean value and that the normal curve was the ideal curve, since it followed the law of errors; hence, all the variation around the mean had to conform to this curve. That Pearson would go on to create a new type of statistics was to a large extent in response to the unshakable conviction, held by so many vital statisticians, mathematicians and philosophers, that the normal distribution was the only feasible distribution for the analysis and interpretation of statistical data.

Pearson wanted to find another way to interpret the data without trying to normalise it, as Galton and Quetelet had done.

Pearsonian mathematical statistics was thus built upon Charles Darwin’s recognition that species comprised different sets of ‘statistical populations’ underpinned by individual variation.

Эйзенхарт и MacTutor описывают «Natural Inheritance» как поворотную для Пирсона книгу, вплоть до слов Эйзенхарта «Pearson became quite charmed by the concept and implications of Galton's “correlation”».

Спор: Эйзенхарт подчёркивает именно различие двух постановок, а не заимствование: сам Пирсон предпочитал метод моментов, и, по его словам, «Pearson clearly favored his method of moments; but the method of least squares has prevailed».

In this classical development of the method of least squares, one of the variables-x, for example—was a quantity that could be measured with negligible error, and the other, y, a quantity of interest functionally related to x, the observed values of which for particular values of x, Yx, were, however, subject to nonnegligible measurement errors.

In the Galton-Pearson correlation situation, in contrast, the traits X and Y may both be measurable with negligible error with respect to any single individual but in some population of individuals have a joint frequency or probability distribution.

Pearson also established the professional accoutrements necessary to establish and to institutionalise the new discipline of mathematical statistics: with Weldon he founded Biometrika in November 1900, he established the Drapers’ Biometric Laboratory in 1903, and set up the first-ever degree course in mathematical statistics in 1917.

Висшер и Годдард пишут прямо: «Fisher built upon previous work by Yule and Pearson».

he improved upon the kinds of models that Pearson, Weldon, and Yule had been considering 10–20 years before, and showed clearly that the correlations observed between human relatives not only could be interpreted on the supposition of Mendelian inheritance, but also that Mendelian inheritance must lead to precisely the kind of correlations observed.
